Understanding Social Media in the business environment
The new worldwide web is now the most direct, immediate and cost-effective of marketing & publicity channels. Using it requires a more direct and upfront approach; cut through the noise, attract attention to a brand and brand-related content, and engage with an audience.
The web is now a more social space, where hype is often ineffective, where people have conversations, and where personal recommendations count for a lot. Joining the conversation, establishing and developing a network, linking people to brands & content, and brands & content to people. These are now key parts of any online marketing & communications strategy. One that you are also able to control, monitor & measure.
Broadband internet, video-enabled smart phones, Facebook, Flickr, Digg & Twitter are part of the new marketing toolkit, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Social Media Optimisation (SMO), blogging, content aggregation and viral marketing are among the new skill sets.
Plan your strategy. Select your tools and tactics carefully. Use the right language in the right way. Obey the unwritten rules of etiquette and behaviour, and remain patient, focused and committed to the process. It is important to understand that this is a conversation. Establishing an audience using this organic process takes time & cannot be forced.
While advertising, marketing and publicising a product or service, you will see and hear people talking about it and the organisation behind it quite publicly, and not always favourably. This is part of the process. This you can’t control. Accept it, embrace it, learn things from it, use it to your advantage. Attempts to control the conversation generally fail. They come across as forced, manipulative, and insincere.
