Staff Training Pinpointed As Panacea For Recession

The UK Government will set aside a dedicated fund for small businesses to train existing staff in a bid to help them weather the global economic downturn. It will also relax its rules on funding training. This will enable companies to secure funding for small units or individual modules in areas that are relevant to their business so, for example, businesses in the creative industry can stipulate training on new forms of creative software.

The Government’s new focus on training is recognition that investment in staff skill development is the best way to beat the recession. It also comes almost two years after the Leitch Review of Skills concluded that the UK must urgently raise achievements at all levels of skills if the UK is to become a world leader in skills by 2020.

But do Britain’s creative businesses agree? Have a look at our quick training survey and have your say on the importance of staff training to maintaining a successful business. Click here to take the survey.

Training providers like Mekon Creatives will play an essential role in helping the UK to strengthen its skills base and realise the potential benefits identified by the Leitch Review, estimated to be worth at least £80 billion over 30 years.

The Government knows that investing in staff training leads to a more highly skilled, more flexible and more productive workforce, and can eliminate the need to cut into budgets by employing extra specialists.

With political and economic pundits predicting the worst recession for decades, every small- and medium-sized enterprise should be looking to invest inwardly by maximising their employees’ skills base, and thus giving them the best chance of staying afloat until the economy improves.
